Frequently asked questions
Why is the bottom colder than the shore?+−
In spring the surface warms up faster than the depths, and those two layers don't always mix. At ten or fifteen metres you can therefore end up a few degrees colder than what you feel at the shore. In the Oosterschelde the tide mixes the water considerably, so the differences there are smaller than in the Grevelingen or the Veerse Meer.
Why does the measuring point differ from my site?+−
Rijkswaterstaat measures at fixed points, not at every dive site. Choose the point in the same body of water as your site; a degree of difference over a few kilometres is normal, and shallow water heats up further locally on a sunny, windless day.
Which waters are missing?+−
Only national waters are measured, and only points that lie in diving water are listed here. Sand and peat extraction lakes such as Vinkeveen fall under the regional water authorities and have no open measurement series; rivers are not included, because flowing water behaves differently from a deep lake next to it.
